Breakfast cereals are fragile, low-density pieces that crush under rough handling and demand gentle, high-volume dosing. Flakes, rings, puffs, clusters and oat blends behave as free flowing granules, but they are unusually bulky for their weight: a 500 g bag of cereal is a large bag, while the same 500 g of sugar would occupy a fraction of that space. Light, voluminous and breakable at the same time — that combination is what makes the product difficult. Every extra drop height, hard transfer or narrow restriction turns whole pieces into fines, and fines are unwelcome twice over: they cost saleable weight, and they migrate into the seal area, where trapped dust is the usual cause of leaking bags. Coated and sweetened varieties add stickiness on contact surfaces, and mixed products such as muesli or granola can segregate if they are handled carelessly. Volumetric filling tuned for large light granules is the right answer here. The product flows freely and its bulk density is reasonably stable, so a calibrated volume converts predictably into weight, and the doser treats the pieces gently — the cereal falls under gravity instead of being pushed. An auger is wrong for this material: a screw belongs to fine powders and would grind flakes into dust. Piston filling belongs to liquids and pastes. Where a blend varies widely in piece size and density, weighing is the alternative; for uniform flakes, rings and puffs a volumetric doser is the simpler, faster and more repeatable route. Generous forming tubes and strong yet easy-open seals define these VFFS lines. The working format is the pillow bag, formed, filled and sealed vertically from a single reel of film; a gusseted version gives the family bag that stands on the shelf, and the same platform produces the single-bowl portion pack for hotels, catering, airlines and variety packs. Single-bowl portion packs and family pillow bags run on the same platform with a change of forming tube and dose setting. Sachet and stick pack machines sit below this range — they serve single portions of a few grams, not a breakfast pack — so a cereal packaging machine is in practice a vertical bagger rather than a sachet line. The dose window on these cereal filling machines runs from 250 g to 3000 g. Output on a single-tube VFFS is straightforward: one cycle is one bag, up to 50 bags per minute, with 40-50 per minute the practical band. There is no lane multiplication here, so the figure quoted is the number of bags. Where a job lands inside that band depends on bag width and length, dose volume, film behaviour and sealing time; a 3000 g family bag with a long fill runs slower than a 250 g portion pack.
