Packaging Notes

BBQ sauce combines high viscosity with particulates — smoke solids, spice specks, sugar that caramelises on hot seal jaws. The viscosity means the sauce has to be pushed rather than left to flow, and it shifts with temperature, so the same recipe behaves differently at the start of a shift and after the line has warmed through. The particulates have to travel the dosing path without being crushed or held back, or the first packs of a batch carry the spice and the last ones only the base. The sugar makes seal quality decisive: sauce that reaches the seal zone caramelises against heated jaws, and burnt residue weakens the weld until packs that looked closed on the machine open later. A piston filler with a shut-off nozzle places the sauce clear of the seal zone, and controlled jaw temperature prevents burnt sugar residue from weakening the weld. Piston dosing meters displaced volume rather than free flow, so a thick, temperature-sensitive sauce gives the same shot cycle after cycle where a gravity filler would drift. The nozzle bore is sized to pass smoke solids and spice particles whole, and the shut-off action cuts the tail cleanly so nothing strings onto the sealing area. The hopper is kept moving so solids stay in suspension over a long run, and contact parts are specified for an acidic, particle-loaded product. In stick pack format the sauce is a single portion the end user tears and squeezes — narrow, easy to drop into a delivery bag. Sachet format, three-side or four-side seal, carries most of the volume: a flat sachet takes a slightly larger portion, prints a bigger brand face and stacks well in food service dispensing boxes. Portion sachets for food service and delivery are the highest-volume application, running multi-lane for throughput. The working dose range is 5 to 15 ml. Output depends on pack width, because lane count follows the pack: an MSM1200 runs up to 960 packs per minute on a narrow pack with twelve lanes, while the same machine on a wide pack runs six lanes and up to 480 packs per minute. Lane counts across the range are ARTISTICK 1-5, HSM 1-3, ISM400 2-5, ISM600 3-7, MSM800 4-10, MSM1200 6-12, SPM320 1-8, SPM800 4-12 and SPM1200 7-12. Cycle rate and packs per minute are not the same figure, so pack width has to be fixed before an output number means anything. Portion size, pack width and required output decide which BBQ sauce filling machine fits a given line.
