Packaging Notes

Electrolyte blends are salt-based and fiercely hygroscopic — a poorly sealed stick turns to brick in a gym bag. That one property sets the terms for the whole packaging line. As a non-free-flowing powder it bridges over the hopper outlet, clings to contact surfaces and consolidates under its own weight instead of pouring cleanly. Most blends put chlorides and citrates alongside acid, flavour and sweetener, and those ingredients rarely share a particle size, so a hopper left unagitated can segregate before a dose is ever formed. Moisture is the second problem: the powder takes it up in the seconds it is exposed in the fill tube and in the open pack, and once that happens the dose cakes and powder left in the seal area turns into leaking packs. An electrolyte powder filling machine for this material is built around auger dosing. An auger meters by rotation rather than by volume, so it stays accurate while bulk density drifts with compaction and from batch to batch — exactly where a volumetric cup loses weight control. A servo-driven auger, an agitator keeping the hopper live, precise dosing to label claim and checkweigher feedback correcting the set point together hold the declared weight without over-filling every pack as a safety margin. Dry filling environments, with dehumidified air over the hopper and around the fill area, keep every dose pourable, and high-barrier films keep it that way afterwards. Three formats cover almost all of the demand. The stick pack is the single dose the consumer tips into a water bottle; it is the format that made the category portable, and most new brands start with an electrolyte powder stick pack machine. Sachets, sealed on four sides, suit larger servings, sampling, and pharmacy or hospital distribution where a flat pack is easier to store and dispense. VFFS pillow bags cover bulk and refill packs for foodservice and the larger household or clinical pack. Dose window and output are set by your own product. Fill weight, bulk density after settling and pack width all move the answer, so both are confirmed against a powder sample and a pack drawing rather than published as a single figure. On multi-lane machines, output is the cycle rate multiplied by the number of lanes, and lane count is limited by pack width — a narrow stick allows more lanes across the same web than a wide one. On a VFFS machine there is no multiplier: one cycle is one bag.
