Packaging Notes

Pudding powder is a starch-sugar blend, often with cocoa, that flows unevenly and dusts at the nozzle. The fractions behave differently: sugar is coarse and heavy, starch and cocoa are fine and light, so the mix segregates in the hopper and bridges over the outlet instead of falling freely. The fine fraction goes airborne at the moment of discharge, and dust landing on the sealing area turns into a weak or contaminated seal. Starch is also hygroscopic — moisture picked up in the hopper or through the film cakes the powder, and the dessert no longer sets the way the recipe says it should. A pudding powder packaging machine therefore has to keep the blend homogeneous, meter it accurately although it does not flow, and keep the seal area clean. Dosing is by agitated auger. Volumetric cups and free-fall systems assume the product flows consistently, which this blend does not; the auger removes that dependency, because the screw displaces a fixed volume per turn. An agitator in the hopper keeps starch, sugar and cocoa mixed and breaks the bridge that would otherwise form over the screw, so the dose repeats whether the hopper is full or nearly empty. Agitated auger dosing evens out the blend, and a shut-off nozzle cuts the powder column at the end of each shot so the fine fraction does not drift onto the seal jaws. Moisture-barrier film keeps the starch active for a clean set. Portion sachets sized to one recipe are the standard home-baking unit, and most of the volume sits there: a four-side seal sachet holds one batch and is emptied in one go. Narrow packs run as stick packs, which suit single-serve and food-service portions and let more lanes work side by side. Either way the pack is single-use, so it does not need to be reclosable — the barrier only has to hold until opening. Dose range is 30 to 70 g. On a pudding powder stick pack machine of this class the output follows pack width, because pack width decides how many lanes fit across the machine. The HSM runs 1 to 3 lanes: with narrow packs it works three lanes and reaches up to 225 packs per minute; with wide packs it drops to a single lane at up to 75 packs per minute.
