Tomato soup powder is acidic, strongly pigmented and hygroscopic — it stains equipment and cakes in humidity. Each of those three properties creates its own problem on the line. The acidity works on contact parts that were not specified for it. The pigment marks hoppers, augers, forming tubes and every surface the powder touches, and it carries over into the next product if the dosing group cannot be stripped and cleaned. The hygroscopic behaviour shows up as caking: the powder takes ambient moisture, forms lumps and loses what little flow it had. It is a non-free-flowing powder — it bridges over the hopper outlet and rat-holes instead of feeding by gravity, and its bulk density shifts with standing time and with how much moisture it has picked up. Fines lift as airborne dust during filling and settle on the sealing area, where a thin film of powder is enough to leave a channel in the seal. Dosing therefore has to be positive rather than gravity-fed, which is why a tomato soup powder filling machine is built around an agitated auger.
