Powder Packaging Automation: Multi Count Flow Wrapping Solutions

Introduction

Modern consumers expect convenient,

ortioned powdered products – from protein mixes and spices to nutraceuticals. For manufacturers, this means combining precise powder filling with secondary packaging that protects the product and presents multiple sachets or stick packs as a single unit. Recent projects at Mentpack show how integrating powder filling machines with flow wrappers can produce multi count packs (3 , 5 , 10  and 15 count) efficiently and consistently. In this article we explore the technology behind powder packaging automation and explain how multi count flow wrapping works.

Powder filling machines are automated systems that measure and dispense powdered materials into containers with high accuracy. They use auger, volumetric cup, weigh or screw feed technology to ensure each sachet or stick pack contains the correct dose. Automated filling improves efficiency and consistency, reduces contamination risks and cuts operational costs.

Managing dust and maintaining quality

Powdered products often create dust that can interfere with seals and harm equipment. Modern packaging machines combat these issues with features such as:

  • Enclosed jaw drives – sealing jaws are enclosed to protect moving parts from airborne particles
  • Dust proof enclosures and proper IP ratings – electrical and pneumatic components are sealed to keep dust out; machines should have an IP rating suitable for dusty environments.
  • Dust suction equipment – vacuum systems remove particulates at key points to prevent dust from entering package seams.
  • Static elimination and vacuum pull belts – antistatic bars and vacuum belts stop powder from clinging to film and maintain consistent film tension.
  • Continuous motion and preventive maintenance – continuous motion machines create downward airflow to keep dust inside packages, and regular maintenance ensures long‑term reliability.

Integrating flow wrappers for multi count packaging

Flow wrappers package products horizontally in a protective film; after the product is fed, the film is wrapped around it and sealed longitudinally and transversely. When integrated with other equipment, flow wrappers become powerful components of an automated line. Typical integrations include:

  • Carton or case packers – count wrapped sachets and pack them into boxes for shipping.
  • Stick pack or VFFS machines – convey filled sachets or stick packs to the flow wrapper for an outer wrap; ideal for multi‑pack powders.
  • Premade pouch or secondary flow wrapper – group primary packs and wrap them again for added protection or promotional bundling.
  • Custom solutions – complex lines can include fillers, counters, flow wrappers and cartoners to create unique kits or bundles..

Integrated systems should be designed by experienced suppliers who assess your existing line, consult on layout, implement synchronized controls and provide training and preventive maintenance.

Case study: Mentpack’s multi count powder packaging line

For a recent client, Mentpack built a turnkey line that combines a high precision powder filler with a horizontal flow wrapper. After filling sachets, a counting module collates 3, 5, 10 or 15 packs. The groups are fed into the flow wrapper, which wraps them in an outer film and creates a single retail‟ready unit. This integrated solution reduces labour, ensures consistent counts and allows the customer to market multi‟serve portions without manual repackaging. By using enclosed drives, dust extraction and continuous motion design, the line runs cleanly and meets hygiene standards even with dusty powders.

Choosing the right solution

Selecting the best powder packaging system depends on:

  • Powder characteristics – free flowing powders suit auger fillers, while cohesive or hygroscopic powders may require volumetric or weigh fillers.
  • Packaging format – determine whether single‑serve sachets, stick packs, pouches or jars meet your marketing goals.
  • Count per pack – decide on the multi‟count configuration (e.g., 3, 5, 10 or 15) and select counting and flow wrapping equipment accordingly.
  • Regulatory requirements – choose machinery with appropriate IP ratings and dust-management features for your processing environment.
